A Feast for the Eyes, by Marjan Sierhuis

31/7/2020

She watches from a distance. A wide-brimmed hat protects her face from the powerful rays of the sun. Her eyes hide behind Aviator style sunglasses.

Powerful leg muscles pump like crazy, as the man jogs along the boardwalk. Hair, the color of salt and pepper escapes from under his baseball cap and clings to his forehead. Skin glistens as moisture exudes through the pores.

He adjusts his speed when he nears the bench. The woman smiles seductively.

Twenty years of marriage and her husband is still a feast for the eyes.

Can I swap hubbies? After forty-three years together mine doesn't have quite the same appeal as a glistening toy boy.

Sue. As the saying goes, 'Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.' Congrats on your forty-three years, and for reading.

I love how suspense builds from the first sentence, Marjan. Only to realize it was only her husband. Thanks for this happy tale.

(Sue’s “glistening toy boy” had me almost spilling breakfast coffee over myself. Good one for the imagination.)

Sometimes it is fun to let the imagination run a little wild. Thank you, Krystyna for reading.

With the world filled with so many relationships that fade or fail, I always love to read a story of an enduring bond. And that, like you say in a previous reply, beauty remains in the eye of the beholder. Once I discovered this was her husband, I gave pause to wonder if this was indeed within her own eye (which is fine and great) or if he really was a "glistening boy toy." All fun and a great read.

She's lucky, lasting marriage, and a handsome man. Enjoyable.

Lovely Marjan - I have one of those - 48 years in Dec.
the description makes us wonder - will the ending by happy or sad? The suspense keeps me reading and...my second smile of the day. Thank you and congrats (sensitive without sentimentality).

    "Classic"
    100-Word
    Stories

Since Friday Flash Fiction began in September 2013, 100-word stories have remained its 'beating heart'.

Normally, 100-word stories are scheduled for 07.00 BST (GMT in the winter) on the following Friday. However, where a large number of stories (more than 25) are due to be published on the same day, we publish a second batch around 10.30am.
Recently, we've welcomed a lot of newcomers and found that even two batches doesn't cover them all. Wherever that happens, we'll simply be publishing 'as and when' during the course of the day.

Each week we pick a story or (occasionally) a poem as 'Editor's Choice'.
It's a personal favourite, no more. Do you agree?
