Intuition made her backtrack and stare at Ellery’s bedroom window until the ladder and pair of shoes jogged her memory of their conversation; she felt silly.
Avery continued to the bathroom and yelled, “Why didn’t you tell me you already called someone to come clean the gutters?”
“I didn’t call anybody yet!” Ellery responded, “What are you talking about?”
The window glass shattered, and a heavy thud echoed.
