A Hot Date, by Gordon Lawrie

Naturally, this isn't eligible for any contest. It's not even fiction. But after Peggy Gerber's story "Dinner of Love", I couldn't resist it. Sorry. Editorial privilege.
FOOD
It's 1972, and it's a promising early date. Her parents are away from home, and she's cooking that seventies' retro classic, spaghetti bolognese. In the kitchen, she invites me to taste the ragu: we agree it needs a little cayenne. So she goes to shake the little pot... and the entire top comes off, depositing a mound of red powder into our evening meal.

I insist that we scrape what we can off the top, then eat it. It tastes... spicy.

49 years later, we still eat lots of spicy food, but these days I do most of the cooking.

A delicious spicy tale of true love. So, what type of “spicy” foods do you make?
The other day, I sprinkled a bit too much cayenne into my homemade soup. Almost sent us through the our house roof. Luckily, I was allowed to continue with cooking.

I, too, had my culinary mistakes and my guy married me. You guys are simply wonderful. Very nice story, Gordon.

This was a lovely story with a perfect title. It’s wonderful that 49 years later you can still laugh at the memory.

It would be rude not to answer Krystyna's spicy question: curries, chillis, enchiladas, jerk chicken; anything with chipotles; and a cupboard staple is a jar of peperoncino flakes. But thanks to Peggy for prompting such an amusing memory – my wife and I still laugh at it.

Love is indeed the spice of life and hot spicing up love is always a good recipe.

A lovely picture of learning from experience, those spice pot tops can be dodgy. And it’s always good when you can laugh together.

Good way for her to get out of the cooking right from the start. Funny ending.

For the avoidance of doubt, Katherine is an excellent cook – I hope so, because it's her turn tonight! But we're on a 5-2 diet: I cook five nights a week, she cooks two.

We too are on a 5-2 diet. I've done five decades...he did two weeks of take away food.😊

Had a few fumbles myself along the way. Looks like she got the better of you for 49 years. Maybe not so much a cook as a smart cookie.
