Instead of sitting shiva, Leslie performed the final inventory. Melancholy reigned until she recorded the sale of “Best Young Poets of 1973.” Inside this ancient anthology resided “Idyllic Autumn” by Leslie Jacobson. Her legacy shall continue.
Legacy Bookstore was gone. For 42 years Leslie nobly operated this quaint literary haven. She saw her baby flourish (modestly, of course). Putting all your eggs in one basket might pay dividends, it seemed. But mammon had recently intruded upon Leslie’s Eden. Her landlord curtly informed her that he could get $500,000 more for the space. And he would. MBA vs. MFA yet again.

We have such a similar situation in Looe. Our quaint and gorgeous bookshop is in dire danger. The owners have to sell (they've fought against developers but it hangs in the balance). I'd love to 'do a Lesley' and be able to buy it! 🍀

I hope things work out for your bookshop, Fliss. Such "havens" are as vital to a community as houses of worship & hospitals (perhaps more so, depending on your ailment).

Heartwarming - I love a story where the tables are turned on the greedy.

Right on re independent bookshops & mom-and-pop businesses. The lovely Leslies out there mustn't go the way of the woolly mammoth. Thanks, Sandra.
