Big World, Small World, by Don Tassone

Angela scrolled through the news. It was all bad, and it saddened her.

So she decided to unplug from the news and the world at large and fully immerse herself in the small world of her everyday life.

But soon Angela felt hemmed in and a little bored. She missed not knowing what was happening in the larger world.

So she began scanning the news again. It was still bad. Now, though, she didn’t let it sadden her. She chose to let it enlighten her.

Then Angela turned back to her small world and began to enrich it.

To enrich one's world with the ordinary 'news' seems to be the only way out.

Community seems to be essential to a happy life. We can’t put our heads in the sand and wait for a better day, we have to be a part of making a better day.

Angela nailed it! As much as we don’t like what’s going on in the ‘big’ world, we still need to know at least some of what’s going on but there’s so much going on in our personal space too.

Great story on perspectives, Don.

If only it were that easy. With the algorithms tainting one's newsfeed and ads, it takes great effort to find "tolerable" news, much less good news. I try to keep my switch to off, but there's still a desire to know what's going on with the world, even though most of the time you can't understand why such things are happening.
Nice one Don
Keep spreading that optimism.
A lot of us sure can use it.

Jim

The news overwhelms me sometimes and I wish I could do more physically to help the starving and displaced, but all I can do is donate.

Tend your own garden. That includes those you can actually touch, one way or the other. Thanks Don. We need to keep optimistic. Things have a way of working out.

    Friday Flash Fiction
    Rules
    Kinda obvious, really...
    • Fiction only
    • Stories of 90-100 words only
    • Don't be nasty or cheat
    • Include your name and a story title

    EDITOR'S CHOICE
Each week, our editor selects a story or (occasionally) a poem as 'Editor's Choice'.

During contests, both Editor's Choice and comments are suspended.

Please feel free to comment (nicely!) on any stories – writers appreciate it.
Naturally, we reserve the reserve the right to remove comments we feel are inappropriate, or where there's a possibility they may come from a source associated with online spam or abuse. If you have one, please switch off your VPN and don't post from a public server.

Since Friday Flash Fiction began in September 2013, 100-word stories have remained its 'beating heart'.

Normally, 100-word stories are scheduled for 07.00 BST (GMT in the winter) on the following Friday. However, where a larger number of stories (more than 25) are due to be published on the same day, we publish the later ones EARLIER around 3.00 am. On the rare occasions where there are more than 50 stories, we'll post an even earlier set, probably around 2.00 am UK time.

We have a FACEBOOK PAGE where regular contributors can share ideas and discuss stories. Why not join in?
