Bill sat in Bill’s house. It wasn’t actually a house, it was the entrance booth to the park where Bill checked township permits. When it was decided that the park should be open to all, no one had the heart to tell Bill he was no longer needed. He would sit in his house each day waving at the visitors. It did not disturb him that no one showed permits. After Bill no longer showed up, the booth was cleared. Piles of binders were found with entries of car colors along with many showing the adjoining entry, “smiled back.”

A wave and a smile. I'm imagining Bill's pleasure at being acknowledged.

I loved this, David, although I do wonder what became of Bill. Maybe he's at the Pearly Gates checking the permits of those who wish to enter. Comments are closed.
