His tie was choking, but looked good. This was a big day, and he had studied. A serious-minded child, he identified with a Saint who offered himself when persecuted, purposely leaving his belongings to the poor. The solemn priest before the boy asked for his new Christian name. “Phocas,” the boy said. The priest hesitated and asked again. The boy repeated, “Phocas.” Blinking profusely, the priest clenched his jaw, and jammed an oiled thumb into the boy's forehead forcing him back a step. Focused, and fully confirmed, the serious-minded boy removed his tie and never returned.
