Conscripted, by Don Tassone

27/1/2023

The young man looked out the train window, his eyes searching for his parents in the crowd of people waving goodbye to loved ones who, like him, were riding off to war.

He didn’t want to go but had little choice. He could have tried to flee. But if he had made it, he might never see his family again. And if he’d been caught, he would have been imprisoned.

Now his parents came into view, but they were not waving or even looking his way. They were holding one another. His mother faced away. He saw his father crying.

The wounding and casualties start before the first shot is ever fired in a war.
And at the end, there are no winners.
Nicely done. Don

I agree with Jim. The trauma of war begins well before the war.
Superbly done, Don.

Wars have brought nothing but destruction and separation. Enjoyed it, Don.

They held each other in shame, knowing their child will be dying for them. No parent should outlive his child. Their hearts will continue beating only to be breaking.

So very, very touching...

Well done, Don. A nice twist at the end that contains a pretty complex message. I feel sorry for the conscript, but if he survives may be he will move on beyond the world of his parents.

A genuine heart-wrencher! How many times has this scene been relived (or re-deathed) in history? Still people keep killing each other. Sadly but well expressed, Don.

A good depiction of what happens to individual lives in the aftermate of a war. I really liked this, Don.

For all the horrors of war, to know that you're fighting an unjust war must be a terrible burden on the warrior.

Jim is absolutely right - there are no winners. So much pointless pain.

Terrific, Don. From every side war is senseless, so why do we do it? Greed. Who pays? We know the answer to that.

Realistic and well-written

Conscripts were given no choice. Countless tears shed by loved ones during these forced goodbyes
