Ah, well. There’s the alarm. Time to get up.
Mmmm. Morning. Daybreak. Before the alarm rings. My favourite time of day. Mind and body at their most relaxed. My most creative time. My thoughts roam freely, my inner censor still asleep. The day’s responsibilities can wait, while I lie snug and cozy. The birds and crickets are already awake and serenading me outside my window, but my kids are still asleep. All is quiet except nature.
Ah, well. There’s the alarm. Time to get up.

One of the many things I love about retirement is that the clock is almost completely silenced. Although I rarely slept until it went off even when I did work, its mere threat was bothersome enough.

Lynn, I suggest the "Serenading Crickets and Birds Alarm Clock." You can probably find them on Amazon. :)

When I worked, I generally used an alarm clock app instead of a physical clock; the app I used woke me to some of my favourite music. I still loathed it going off. (I'm a morning person, but I had to get up too early even for my tastes.)

I hadn't thought of it in quite those terms, but I like it. Thank you, Paritosh.

My favourite time of day, probably. Nicely done.

When I was at my busiest, my favourite time of day was when I could finally collapse in bed at night, but for most of my life (including the present), the moment I described has been my favourite, as well.

I'm with Greg, Lynn. Alarm clocks are the worst! I'd rather get up with the birds. But of course, what works for you works for you. Nice story.

Alarm clocks absolutely did not work for me. I used the app because I needed a safety net to ensure I arose at a particular hour. Although I usually turned it off for the day before it sounded, just having that sword of Damocles was unpleasant. (I love retirement!)

Lovely description of some "alone" time just soaking up the sounds of nature and the coziness of her bed. But then, of course, the day begins.

When I think of hygge, that moment is one of the first to come to mind.

Thank you, David. I'm delighted you noticed the pacing. I had fun using it to try to convey a person's increasing clarity and coherence upon awakening.

Thank you, Sivan. I've been appreciating that simple pleasure even more now that COVID has currently limited or eliminated a lot of the other pleasures normally available.
