When I met some kindergarteners at the ocean, one of them asked, “Why do boats float?” Another one asked, “What makes the tides go up and down?” There were other questions. “Is that sea lion a boy or a girl?” “Do people add salt to the ocean?” “I know it’s an egret, but what’s its name?” I was overwhelmed. I knew the answers. At least most of them. I know about tides and buoyancy and displacement and birds. I learned these things in school. And yet... there is a five-year-old part of me that still wonders... why do boats float?

Ask them when they're six, Jim. By then, they'll have all the answers. My mother tried to sneak me into the first grade when I was five. The teacher thought I was mentally challenged.

It is wonderful being with children and seeing the world through their eyes. Lovely story.

It's great that we have children to keep us asking questions. And you didn't know the egret's name?:)

I know how boats float and aircraft fly, but in the words of Somewhere Over the Rainbow...why then, oh why can't I.
