Following the sound of water splashing, Lucy entered the kitchen in time to see the old lady rinsing daffodils, carnations and roses under the tap.
'Why don't you buy freshly cut ones?' Lucy asked. 'They smell pretty, too.'
Grandma flinched and shook her head.
'No. I can't bear to hear their screams of pain as they die slowly in a vase of water,' she said.
