Olga’s never left home before the war thrusts her and baby son into a forty-hour drive in a cramped, smelly train. It stops now and then for the missiles to try their luck as she lulls her kid to air sirens. Telling him that life is precious, knowing that now it hardly costs a broken penny.

Sheepishly, she follows the smiley lady-volunteer to a new home, fearing about the price for their souls. In the kitchen, the woman opens the fridge and says in lame Ukrainian, “Pick anything. Free.” She repeats Free, and tears burn Olga’s eyes like chili pepper.

As the others said above. And keep writing, A) because you're good, B) because it reminds us how lucky we are and C) because we know you're safe.

The situation in your country is tragic beyond words, Malvina. Thank you for reaching out to the ‘sane’ world. We respect your bravery and compassion for the life you knew so well before the evil monster and his puppets try to take it all away.

The monster crashed so many lives and showed the depth of human cruelty but, at the same time, somehow, opened so many hearts. We people shine through the dark, Krystyna, it's tragic, but also beautiful.

So many threats of so many kinds. Glad Olga found a genuinely kind family to stay with. God bless you, Malvina.

Thank you, Jennifer :) I'm glad I don't lie about human kindness here. They do treat refugees this well.

Dear Don,
thank you for your kind words and blessings, and for the suggestion of a donation button of Mission to Ukraine charity organisation. I'm eternally grateful for your help and this opportunity to be of more use to my people. I wish you many happy returns from each and every Ukrainian in need.
Bless you and your family,
Malvina

    100-Word
    Stories

Since Friday Flash Fiction began in September 2013, 100-word stories have remained its 'beating heart'.

Normally, 100-word stories are scheduled for 07.00 BST (GMT in the winter) on the following Friday. However, where a large number of stories (more than 25) are due to be published on the same day, we publish a second batch around 10.30am.

A new feature: each week we'll pick one 100-word story as 'Editor's Choice'.
It's a personal favourite, no more. Do you agree?
