Billy looked all in and older than ever. Joe slid a draft across the bar at him.
“Still working for Carl?”
“Yeah.”
“How can you stand that guy?”
“He pays good.”
“What’s he got you doing?
“We’re digging footings for those houses going up out on Route 282.”
“Pick and shovel work? I thought everybody used backhoes for that now.”
“Carl don’t.”
“He still with that high-strung lady?”
“Nah, she left town with Ray two months ago.”
“Didn’t you have a thing with her last year?”
“Who says that?”
“People talk around here.”
“Well, he still pays good.”
