Hearing Aids, by Bobby Warner

My wife insisted I buy these hearing aids that cost a small fortune, but I can't get used to them! They screech, they scream, they whine and distort all the sounds of the world around me. I had rather let my ears go and become stone deaf than wear these demonic things.

I go to the door, reach up to pluck out those dreaded devices and fling them away forever into the night.

Suddenly my wife, who has perfect hearing and handles our finances, shouts, "No, George! Those hearing aids are much too expensive for you to ever throw away!"

I wonder if he gave them the recommended time needed to get used to them. If he had be would have come to appreciate their true value.

Good point, Sue. I've had hearing aides myself for a few years; and I gotta say that the advantage of hearing better outweighs any inconvenience they might present. Thanks for the comment.

Hmmm... would he have thrown them out all the same had his wife said at the start that they cost a “large fortune”?

100-Word
Stories

Since Friday Flash Fiction began in September 2013, 100-word stories have remained its 'beating heart'.

Normally, 100-word stories are scheduled for 07.00 BST (GMT in the winter) on the following Friday. However, where a large number of stories (more than 25) are due to be published on the same day, we publish a second batch around 10.30am.
Recently, we've welcomed a lot of newcomers and found that even two batches doesn't cover them all. Wherever that happens, we'll simply be publishing 'as and when' during the course of the day.

Each week we pick a story or (occasionally) a poem as 'Editor's Choice'.
It's a personal favourite, no more. Do you agree?
