If It Sounds Too Good To Be True, by Norman Shaft

27/8/2021

The sofa is new to me. The previous owner gifted it and sent it 200 miles north in a van. It arrived, covered in miles of clingfilm like a party leftover.

Made from luxurious brown leather, it feels like smooth chocolate as you caress it. Supple, it moulds to your shape, swallowing you up.

On its arrival I was told "Wax it, to feed the leather."

Is it alive now that I've fed it? Is its appetite whetted? Am I on the menu, or maybe the children?

It shouldn't be here.

That which came for free, came at a price.

Haha! Not enough with couch potato life, now there's the carnivorous sofa! Keep waxing to placate it!

Or feed any visitors to it? Haha.

That gave me shivers, Norman! And, I think it could be the start of a much longer story or novel. Well done :)

Thanks as always Sandra. I can never get any further than the 100 words. Any tips? Seriously.

Don't think too hard... I find many of my ideas come, seemingly out of nowhere, when I'm doing something else, especially out walking my dog. Jot down every little idea, no matter how silly some might seem, computer or pen as preferred, and eventually something you really want to go on with will come. I've started writing longer stories and written several hundred words, then a different idea/approach pops in and I re-start. It's never wasted, think of it like training as in an athlete running laps :)
My first baby was born 9 weeks prem and 'everyone' gave me 'advice'! When I told the paediatrician, he told me to listen to them all, then go home and do what I thought! It's the same with writing, listen to it all, some will be good, some you'll want to ignore, but it will all help cement and enhance your own ideas.
Good luck, Norman. I look forward to reading more :)

Definitely hints of Stephen King...a demon possessed sofa? Horror and comedy mixed into one.

Wow! Praise indeed Paul. Thank you.

Thanks Marjan. As always.
This is true actually. The sofa is in my front room as I type!

Norman, if that sofa does exist I'd seriously think of sending it on to a new owner! ;-)
The other thing it reminded me of was Dr Who and the Autons (showing my age here..Jon Pertwee time). There was a scene whereby a seat, albeit plastic not leather that swallowed the person who sat in it. Scary stuff as a little kid..quite funny to watch now.

I'm of the same era Paul, Jon Pertwee! Don't remember that particular episode but like you say, probably funny to watch now. I feel a YouTube search coming.

The stuff of Twilight Zone. I knew if I sat on your sofa I'd feel myself sinking deeper and deeper into that luxurious, cavernous mouth. Like Paul says, recycle.

"Cavernous mouth" thanks Sue. I'll have to remember that description if I ever write a longer version of this, or even a screenplay...

Your story gives a lot of scope to one's imagination, which is the way it should be in flash fiction, I think.

Thank you Gautam.
