In Search of Perfection, by Russell Conover

18/9/2020

Jennifer had been working on her novel for months. The story was solid, but something still sounded off. She couldn't identify what was wrong, since she’d had no roadblocks until now.

She dotted every I and crossed every T, as she reviewed till her eyes were red. Then she realized: This is only the first draft. Get something on the screen, and revise everything later.

Then the words flowed. The process was effortless, and Jennifer finally completed her first draft. After celebrating, she vowed to continue the process until she’d finished the job. Her story was waiting to be told.

I need a pen and paper to get my words flowing. It's funny how we are all different. I suppose the important thing is the end product, not the path used to create it.

Hey, that sounds like me :)....getting caught up in revising rather than just getting something on paper.

Let the river of creativity run free then the words will flood the page. Good luck with her, or your, novel.

I couldn't add up the hours I've wasted trying to perfect one line when I should have simply let it flow and worried about editing and fine tuning later! A great reminder :)

Wow! Thanks for your comments, all. I've been down this writing road before, when I wish I could just turn off my brain and see what happens. Easier said than one, though. [smile]

"This is only the first draft." Isn't that the truth! I can relate.

Wow ... thanks for your comments, all. The writing process can definitely be intimidating, though the end result often makes it all worth it. I imagine most writers have been in this situation, haven't they?

    100-Word
    Stories

Since Friday Flash Fiction began in September 2013, 100-word stories have remained its 'beating heart'.

Normally, 100-word stories are scheduled for 07.00 BST (GMT in the winter) on the following Friday. However, where a large number of stories (more than 25) are due to be published on the same day, we publish a second batch around 10.30am.

Each week we pick a story or (occasionally) a poem as 'Editor's Choice'.
It's a personal favourite, no more. Do you agree?
