Several days later, following her discharge, Maria could still smell the smouldering fire at Ground Zero, yet she found herself unable to suppress her boundless joy.
Maria fell back into her hospital bed, her chest still heaving though the pain began to ease. As the nurse approached, Maria saw the jarring sorrow quaking within her eyes. Extending her arms, Maria accepted her new-born child and held him against her bosom. The infant wailed, saturating her yearning heart with love. Yet Maria saw the nurse's furtive glances towards the TV on the wall and, craning her neck, followed her horrified gaze.
