At lunch to get away from his computer Morris walked along a bike path near his house, pulling up his mask when he encountered people. He liked hearing birds, cardinals and goldfinches, singing in the mimosa trees, watching squirrels chase one another up the trunks of pin oaks. After a rain he'd see earthworms wriggling on the asphalt. Before, he'd have ignored them, leaving them to dry up and die in the sun, to crunch beneath bike tires. Now he guided them into the grass and waited for them to disappear in the blades. Another reason to wash his hands.

This slower world has an upside. Let's hope we don't forget when the world returns to normal.

This pandemic has made us all more aware of what's important in life. instead of washing our hands of what doesn't directly concern us. A timely reminder, Scott.
