The moon is huge in the sky tonight, as it has been for several weeks now. It easily fills a whole third of the darkness, blotting out many stars. Something happened with its orbit around the Earth a couple months ago, and our gravitational force is pulling it ever closer, eventually to hit us. We don’t have missiles enough to destroy it, plus now it’s so close that the fragments would destroy most of our blue planet anyway. But my God, it is beautiful. So close and majestic, a giant pale sphere coming home. Luna, apportens mortis.

Death by moon. It has a certain poetic element. Comments are closed.
