No Witnesses, by Peggy Gerber

19/3/2021

The wind howled ferociously as Jack raced from his car to the doctor’s office. He put on his mask before entering the elevator, grimacing when he noticed a jerk not wearing one. He bellowed, “Hey, get off this elevator.”

“Screw you,” the jerk replied as the doors closed.

Without warning, the elevator lurched to a halt, and the jerk began coughing out giant, watery droplets. People started screaming and pounding the walls in panic.

Jack silently put his hands around the jerk’s neck and squeezed tight. When the fire department arrived, they found a dead body. Nobody knew what happened.

Hi: Great story! In real lilfe we are going to run into people like the Jerk on the elevator. Hopefully, we will have patience to deal with it.

Great story, Peggy. I hope I don't run into you in an elevator. :)
(I do wear a mask).

Thanks so much Marie and David. It used to be that people with elevator phobias were the only nervous people in an elevator. Now, everyone is.

Yuck! Hopefully COVID will end soon so we can avoid murder ;)

Covid murder. One day it will come and I bet there'll be no witnesses.

Covid is really driving people crazy...but we may need to wear masks for a long time.

A believable story. Jerks not wearing masks and then there are those with masks covering mouths but not noses. Asking for murder! Well written, Peggy.

Extenuating circumstances. I'm sure there will be a Pandemic plea.

Thanks everyone for your comments. They are very much appreciated.

Krystyna is so right. Why bother covering your mouth and not your nose? Maybe he left his nose exposed for the punch in Peggy's Pandemic Vigilantes. You've upgraded from a punch in the nose to murder. Easy Peggy, easy girl.

Outrageous behaviour on everyone's part.

Since Friday Flash Fiction began in September 2013, 100-word stories have remained its 'beating heart'.

Normally, 100-word stories are scheduled for 07.00 BST (GMT in the winter) on the following Friday. However, where a larger number of stories (more than 25) are due to be published on the same day, we publish the later ones EARLIER around 4.00 am. On the rare occasions where there are more than 50 stories, we'll post an even earlier set, probably around 2.00 am UK time.

We have a FACEBOOK PAGE where regular contributors can share ideas and discuss stories. Why not join in?
