Role Reversal? by Sandra James

‘He’s been ill for a while. He’s a little better but he’s not getting any younger. Perhaps it’s time to consider putting him down? Another round of tests and medication will be expensive.’

‘True. I do feel a bit guilty though. If I cut back on my treats and don’t buy that spiffy new coat or the plush bed, it would go a long way towards all his costs.’

‘Well, it’s your decision. He’s your human.’

Yes, he was only a human!

Thus, Fifi, had Master put down. She can always get a new, younger one.

Liked the twist. A beautiful ending. Well done, Sandra.

Thank you, Paritosh! My story was inspired by a comment from my husband 'it's only a dog' after I told him my youngest son(his stepson), Pip (37), had to take his beloved rescue dog for yet another expensive surgery today.
PS - he came through the surgery well 🙂

Thanks, Sivan! In truth I think most dogs would be more compassionate to humans than some humans are to dogs 😥 But I had fun writing it!

Nice twist, Sandra. Now and again I hear that dreaded phrase, "He/she is only a dog." Tells me all I need to know about that person.
Nicely done
Glad the rescue came through the surgery!

I'll try not to let my dog know if I get ill. A younger master means longer, more exciting walks. Chasing balls or Frisbees. A master who can go out and earn more money for plush beds and treats. Dogs of the world unite.

We are all stewards. Thanks for the reminder, Sandra.

Role reversal indeed, Sandra. "Planet of the Apes" revisited.

Sue, you are a hoot.

    Stories

Since Friday Flash Fiction began in September 2013, 100-word stories have remained its 'beating heart'.

Normally, 100-word stories are scheduled for 07.00 BST (GMT in the winter) on the following Friday. However, where a large number of stories (more than 25) are due to be published on the same day, we publish a second batch around 10.30am.

Each week we pick a story or (occasionally) a poem as 'Editor's Choice'.
It's a personal favourite, no more. Do you agree?
