“So, what are you going to drink?” I said.
“I don’t drink,” he said.
“Ok, I’ll drink for both of us then.”
He smiled. I smiled.
It was at that point we looked at each other with relief. Mutual disinterest was fine. Nice actually.
I still remember the way he instinctively covered his mouth when he chewed as if he wanted to enjoy his bread alone.
