Short Memories, by Don Tassone

20/3/2020

The virus spread. Everyone hunkered down. Leaders reacted unevenly. Factories closed.  The economy tanked.

Eventually, the virus went away, and the world was changed.

People realized how much they loved being together and even going to work.

The air cleared, and governments took a fresh look at climate change.

The economy bounced back.  Bricks and mortar, and strong leadership, still mattered.

People remembered that being fully human means having real contact with other human beings.

But as the pandemic faded, the world reverted to its old ways.  Until the next time, when it learned the same lessons again.

Reminds me of the old Pennsylvania Dutch saying: We get too soon old, too late schmart.

Thank you Don. I like the mid-term positivism and I'm afraid you are right long-term…...eventually we all will be dead. Hence, let's use the time that we have on this plant to make the best out of it and that starts within our circle of influence.

Well said Don.

I wish you were wrong and humankind could retain the lessons they were taught. Well done.

Until the next time, indeed.
Nicely done, Don

Take care

In the words of a comedian whose name escapes me,"Ain't it the truth!"

Another dart on target. Thanks, Don.

We can only hope at least a few learn something :) Great story!

Agree with all the prior comments. Like the curves of the virus itself, the world needs a steep learning curve.

Thanks to all. Be well!

How true, Don! Let’s see if it plays out...although I hope the lessons learned will take longer to forget than it did for them to come to fruition. Thanks for sharing your story!

    100-Word
    Stories

Since Friday Flash Fiction began in September 2013, 100-word stories have remained its 'beating heart'.

Normally, 100-word stories are scheduled for 07.00 BST (GMT in the winter) on the following Friday. However, where a large number of stories (more than 25) are due to be published on the same day, we publish a second batch around 10.30am.

Each week we pick a story or (occasionally) a poem as 'Editor's Choice'.
It's a personal favourite, no more. Do you agree?
