Summer's Promise, by Jaycee Durand

Jaunty pop tunes blast from my radio, and I side-eye a peek into the garden. I love these hot days, sitting at my open bedroom window. Any moment now, he’ll saunter out from the house opposite, lounge in the deckchair beside his brother, and pretend I’m invisible.

I see him, though. Ebony hair, sunshine bouncing off its shine, and flashing teeth as the siblings tease each other.

The breeze lifts his laughter into the surrounding air. A furtive glance. My body warms. All summer we’ve played this game.

Dark eyes engage blue.

This time, he doesn’t look away. And smiles.

How many teenage girls have waited with hearts in mouths for that smile of recognition from the boy of her dreams.
