Early one evening, he drove to a big bridge. Just as he had started across the pedestrian walkway, Richard heard someone below him cry out.
“Help!”
Richard leaned over the railing and spotted someone in the water. He ran back and scrambled down the bank. Twenty yards out, a boy was drowning.
Richard dove in, grabbed the boy and managed to pull him to safety.
That night, Richard reflected on the fact that he’d never learned to swim, and he began to think about his life differently.
