The Door, by Don Tassone

21/2/2025

As I lay dying, I awoke.  My room was filled with soft white light.  In the near distance, I saw a door.

I went over, opened it and stepped through.  Looking around, I realized I was standing before my childhood home.  Everything was just as it was then, even me.

I looked back at the open door. I sensed I could close it and stay there and live my life over again.  Maybe then I could make better choices.

But I knew my choices were a part of me, and I turned around and stepped back through the door.

All crave for another chance, but nothing goes as planned, Don.

An interesting concept, Don. How many of us, if offered the choice, would choose to live our lives again - maybe take different paths, try to live differently? Your conclusion is excellent and to the point - 'my choices were part of me'. Well thought through.

Yes, Don, your character chooses the wise way. To eliminate our poor choices is to lose the opportunities to grow that our errors provide. Thanks for that reminder.

Triumphs and regrets are all part of life's rich pageant. We are who we are. Thanks, Don.

So much wisdom on this page today, as always. And since nothing is ever static, as long as there is breath in your body, you can make any changes you see fit.

How many of us would really want to go back...Our best days are still ahead of us. We'll done, Don

Can’t go back to redo our choices and their consequences. Life is what it is. Poignant message, Don.

We learn from the choices we make, whether good or bad. I like having choice. Thank you for the well written reminder. I now choose to leave the door open and think about my next choice. ;)

Thoughtful tale- perhaps existentially, one can't ever be certain whether any choice is coming or going.

Since Friday Flash Fiction began in September 2013, 100-word stories have remained its 'beating heart'.

Normally, 100-word stories are scheduled for 07.00 BST (GMT in the winter) on the following Friday. However, where a larger number of stories (more than 25) are due to be published on the same day, we publish the later ones EARLIER around 4.00 am. On the rare occasions where there are more than 50 stories, we'll post an even earlier set, probably around 2.00 am UK time.
