Geoffrey stood by the side of his best friend's bed in the army hospital. His pal lost both legs at Ypres but was still smiling.
"You are so lucky you came away unscathed," stated a nurse to Geoffrey, a comment which made him wince inside.
He walked away from the hospital, greedily sucking on a cigarette, which failed to extinguish his mental anguish.
How could that nurse know he would never escape the war? He was tortured in nightmares and the poisonous images never relented.
