Caesar was enough of a politician and general to know that his future was hanging in the balance. He glanced out across the shallow, muddy river. This was the border between Italy proper and Cisalpine Gaul. If he crossed with his armed troops, the Senate would see the move as a threat to the Roman Republic. Was he willing to gamble everything?
Suddenly an apparition appeared. The ghost blew a trumpet then crossed to the other side of the river. This was surely an omen from the gods. Caesar announced, “The die is now cast.”
He crossed.
