The new leaders had been clear about their aims. Still, people were shocked when they saw how the campaign slogans so many had cheered were actually playing out.
When they saw their neighbors rounded up and taken away, convictions overturned, critics jailed and their own rights abridged, people swept the new leaders out of office.
That event marked the beginning of what became known as The Second Enlightenment. It ushered in a new Age of Reason.
