Bobbi stepped under an awning to get out of the rain. In her haste to reach her ex-boyfriend’s apartment with the news, she had forgotten to take an umbrella. The dark street was empty of traffic. The only light was at the street corner flashing DON'T DON'T DON'T. Bobbi expected the sign to change any moment. When it didn’t, she altered her plans, left the protection of the awning, and ran home through the wet. As a result, Sam never learned that he had fathered a child, and it would be another month before the city repaired the crosswalk sign.
