It was Alexander’s last true tooth, hanging shakily onto his red, swollen gums. Over the years the rest had fallen, one by one, until only this final, stubborn holdout remained. He thought of all the meals he and the tooth had shared, all of the fingernails it’d chewed, all of the foreign tongues that’d brushed against it.
