True Love, by Don Tassone

23/6/2023

As a girl, Jennifer loved to paint, though she had few fans. Some kids even laughed at her paintings.

That hurt, but she stuck with it, majoring in art in college.  By then, many reactions to her work were even less kind.

“You’ll starve,” said one classmate.

Sometimes Jennifer felt like walking away from painting, but it always called her back.

After graduation, she tried to sell her paintings.  Few buyers.  She applied to exhibitions.  No takers.

Still, Jennifer kept painting.  She painted her whole life, not for money, recognition or even mastery, but simply because she loved to paint.

'Ars Gratia Artis' - art for the sake of art (the MGM motto). I was expecting her to sell a paining for millions, so it was refreshing that the MC was made of the same stuff as the rest of us.

Love this! Maybe I’ll start painting again.

This strikes a chord, maybe with a bunch of us on this site.

Thanks for the reminder, Don. It’s OK to do things for your own enjoyment. No one has to approve.

Lovely, Don. Sometimes we forget that 'success' isn't being the 'best' or winning, success is loving what you do and being content.

Always for love, not money. Her creativity was Jennifer's just reward.

Well done, Done, for reminding us that doing something purely for the love of it is so important.

I absolutely love this story! And yes, I can relate. Art, writing, music -- I love it all, even if I'll never make a living from any of my creative endeavors. Good for Jennifer for continuing to paint!

Thank you so much, Jenna. I think it’s very important that each of us has something like this in our lives.

    Friday Flash Fiction
    Rules
    Kinda obvious, really...
    • Fiction only
    • Stories of 75-100 words only
    • Don't be nasty or cheat
    • Include your name and a story title

Since Friday Flash Fiction began in September 2013, 100-word stories have remained its 'beating heart'.

Normally, 100-word stories are scheduled for 07.00 BST (GMT in the winter) on the following Friday. However, where a large number of stories (more than 25) are due to be published on the same day, we publish a second batch around 10.30am.

Recently, we've welcomed a lot of newcomers and found that even two batches doesn't cover them all. Wherever that happens, we'll simply be publishing 'as and when' during the course of the day.

Each week we pick a story or (occasionally) a poem as 'Editor's Choice'.
It's a personal favourite, no more. Do you agree?
