Work, by Don Tassone

28/1/2022

“How was it?” he said.

“Okay,” she said.

“Are you tired?  You look tired.”

“I’m fine.”

He sipped his coffee.

“What did you do?”

She opened the fridge and pulled out a can of sparkling water.

“Not much,” she said, sitting down across from him. “Orientation mainly.”

“Do you think you’ll like it?”

“What?”

“Working.”

“Yeah, I do.”

Then, looking away, she added, “You should try it.”

His face turned red. He got up.

“Dinner?” she said.

“I already ate.”

He put his coffee cup in the sink, grabbed a beer from the fridge and stepped into the family room.

Hopefully, he gets the hint...nicely done, Don.

Pamela, Maybe she'll get the hint. Maybe they should both evaluate where they are in life, what they have, what they need. Maybe it marks the end of the mass-consumption generation (mine as a boomer). Just another perspective...

A thought that "Work" created is, "Does he get abusive when he drinks?" I read too much in the news..................

I thought this was going in a couple of other directions at first...I love this story, Don. Was he like that when she married him?

This is just excellent, Don. "You should try it." The line that really makes the story. Says so much, yet, leaves us all wondering. As Dee asks, was he like that in the beginning? What happened along the way? Is she going back to work because he stopped? So many questions, yet the story stands so well on its own.
Nicely done
Jim

John adds a good perspective to Don’s story. I would just like to add that the male in the relationship doesn’t always have to be the breadwinner. That role can be played by either. However, the e employed spouse should be supportive. Without that job, healthcare alone becomes an impossible burden.

Wow, I love how everyone reacted differently to this story. Bravo, Don! Just as people have reacted differently to the pandemic, he has taken the low road and she the high road. At another time, it could be vice versa. Just glad that they both didn't go low.

Liked the open-ended ending. The story offers many perspectives. Superb, Don.
