Magic, by Andrew Carter

A little white bunny hops across patchwork pastures all day, and all night then, props. At dawn, he yawns then wipes his eyes. There’s no surprise that a rabbit, even a young rabbit, needs to rest after such a long hop without any stops. Terribly tired, he takes a nap under a blackberry bush.

He has scary dreams about nasty Mangicians making him perform from a creepy black hat. They laugh and point poky fingers at him. But, he’s a bright white rabbit. He gnaws through the Mangician’s hat and disappears.

He kicks the air in his sleep when he hears a rabbit’s hind feet thumping the ground. Through blurry vision he spies a light brown rabbit pop out from burs and brambles. The old rabbit props then poops bunny dungs before he exclaims out loud, “Ouch! Spindly, spiky thorns. It’s that blind spot in front of my nose again… Oh my gosh. Why, hello young bunster. Say, that’s a bright white coat you have.”

“Stank you. I’ve travelled so far and, I’m a bit lonely. Just thought somebunny might be out here, far from the wicked Mangicians. Say, what’s your name?”

“Warren.”

“Where are you from?”

“Warren … lots of rabbits in Warren so most of us bucks are called, Warren. And, what’s your name?”

“I don’t know,” says the young bunny, trying not to cry.

“Hmmm, tell me about yourself… when you’re ready. Why, it’s never a shame to cry.”

“W-w-w-well, I lived in a black top hat and an evil Mangician pulled me out by my ears, every night. He made me vanish, by trickery, and he didn’t feed me much. So, I chewed through the hat and bit him on the toe making ‘him’ disappear.”

“Oh, that really is magic. So, Magic is your name. You see!”

Magic squizzles his nose with glee. “Magicadabra comin' right at ya.”

Warren feigns surprise. “Did you turn yourself white?”

“No, I think it’s from working at night under spotwhites.” The newfound friends chuckle then, Warren squizzles his nose as he scents a young doe. Magic senses her too, and hints, “I’d really like to meet a girl rabbit, and, and, and I can’t ignaw it anymore.”

“Gnawww, that’s so cute. And, those feelings can be quite a stress.”

“What do I do about it?”

“Don’t worry about it.” Warren smiles.

Magic ponders Warren’s answer when he adds, “We moved over here, to Chewtopia, after nasty Manimals tried to remove us with a deadly virus called Mixedupmatosis.”

“Why is it so hard to be a harmless rabbit?” Magic exclaims. Then, he spies a cluster of berries and tiptoes to reach them. “Nyum, nyum, these are yum.” After taking his fill, he rests in wonder at the majestic green meadows when the young doe appears bobbing her white cottontail.

“This is my daughter, Cha Cha,” Warren exclaims, with pride.

Magic chucks a binkie, and in the blink of an eye Magic and Cha Cha fly.

    Longer Friday Flash Fiction Stories

Friday Flash Fiction is primarily a site for stories of 100 words or fewer, and our authors are expected to take on that challenge if they possibly can. Most stories of under 150 words can be trimmed and we do not accept submissions of 101-150 words.

However, in response to demand, the FFF team constructed this forum for significantly longer stories of 151-500 words. Please send submissions for these using the Submissions Page.

Stories to the 500 word thread will be posted as soon as we can mange.

One little further note. Posting and publishing 500-word stories takes a little time if they need to be formatted, too.
Please note that we tend to post longer flash fiction exactly as we find it – wrong spacing, everything.
