A Good Sport, by Mary Wallace

14/2/2021

SPORT
He sported a beard
Played cricket, tennis. squash
We watched footy together
I thought he was a good sort
He thought I was a good sport

Married
Raised children, grandchildren
Forty years on with nothing in common
Yet sometimes the spark rekindles
And we scream at the umpires on TV

Cute, Mary. Forty years, eh? Same here, and a bit.

Bit more here too Krystyna, but more than 40, (44) sounds scary. At 20 there is no possible way to know what your partner will be like at 64. Thank goodness we can still curse the umpires.

And aren't we glad there's still a spark that could maybe light their fire...if only their team has a win.

I think it is more getting fired up, rather than lighting their fire.🤣🤣🤣🤣

Mature love is a beautiful thing, and what a bonus that there are still sparks.

Well..... I suppose you could say sparks still fly, but they have little to do with your romantic notion Peggy.

I don't think mine will ever go to the football with me again, not after my team beat his 😁😁😁 And the umpiring was perfect!

Probably best not to risk it.

At least screaming at the umpire is an area of common interest. A very honest poem.

Thankyou Padmini, they say to write about what you know.😊

    Poetry

This is the section where fiction prose becomes something else. We still expect the poems to be short, though – sonnets, perhaps, or around that length at the very most.

    Poems submitted should be
    no longer than 160 words
    and contain
    no more than 16 lines.

100 words remains the approximate target.

Please submit using the Submissions Page.
