I Wish I Were a Retiree, by Mary Wallace

17/7/2020

To the tune of Sandi Thom's "I wish I was a punk rocker with flowers in my hair."

I wish I were a retiree without a single care,
I’d move around the countryside or go OS somewhere
I wouldn’t rush I’d take my time there’s so much world to see
Oh I wish I were a retiree enjoying being free.

I wish I were a retiree not just a working wife
I’d cut my hair and buy a car and get on with my life
I’d leave each winter chase the sun, I never would be cold
Oh I wish I were a retiree enjoying growing old

I wish I were a retiree I wouldn’t work too hard
I’d write and read and maybe paint and watch him in the yard
We’d breakfast late and watch the birds, we’d lunch under our tree
Oh I wish I were a retiree enjoying being me.

A little song. I couldn't remember where I had stolen the tune from until recently.

I wondered why I didn't see a story from you this week - instead a lovely fun poem! But - you know, you can enjoy "being me" all through life - just a little harder with the demands of work and family and...well, maybe being retired is the only time to "be me." ;-)
Nice little poem, Mary!

PS - I had to google Sandi Thom's "I Wish I Was a Punk Rocker (With Flowers in My Hair)." Wow - nice little song! Thanks for the side bonus after a great poem!!

I wrote this a number of years ago Jim, when I was working long hours and wishing I were traveling. I drove everybody mad, singing it constantly. Then I retired sick...haven't been singing it much lately.😏

Song and giggles are life's cure - or, at least a nice distraction - from all that ails us. Keep singing, Mary. Let the song(s) take you to where you might have once wanted to be.

Thank you Ana Marie. A little bit of fun.

    Poetry

This is the section where fiction prose becomes something else. We still expect the poems to be short, though – sonnets, perhaps, or around that length at the very most. 100 words remains the approximate target.
