I Wrote a Poem, by Mary Wallace

18/6/2021

I wrote a poem
Found phrases in lines by long remembered poets and long forgotten singers
I dug into history exploring sad and troubled times and rejected words that glorified war.
I cried for those needlessly lost.

I hoped while researching that men had changed
That lessons were learned
That politicians had mellowed
I wrote a poem, then I watched the news
Men haven't changed
New weapons are more deadly
And politicians still fuel the fires of war
I wrote a poem that makes me cry.

And many of us cry as well...
Nicely done, Mary

Thanks Jim. This came about because I wrote a "found poem" using war slogans, war poets and anti war songs. I wish I could have posted that poem, but it doesn't fit within the guidelines. I then wrote this poem about the process.

Mary - Gordon has a wonderful site here, and I love it to death. But I submit to several other publications for my longer efforts. You might want to try Spillwords Press for the poem that didn't quite fit here.

They really focus more on poetry, but I have a number of short stories therre.

Yes. It's absolutely mind-numbing. Very well done, Mary. Can feel and share the despair.

So much said in so few words. Well done, Mary.

You hit the nail on the head. People haven’t changed and it is terrifying that the weapons are more deadly. It makes me cry too.

So eloquently expressed, Mary. The heartbreak goes on. Humanity’s loss enforced with stupidity.

Time and again you stir our souls and consciences with your words, Mary.

You are spot on about weapons being more deadly. And defence analysts do brag about this. What is the use of intelligence when it is used for destruction? Thought-provoking poem.

Thanks for your words, Mary. Humans have not improved, no matter how much we want to believe it. (and I hope you are exploring more sites for variations on your creative writing!)
