Missing the Goal, by Sandra James

My divorced friend hated football
but together we took our kids to the big game
she sat in the stands, head buried
in a War & Peace sized romantic tome
oblivious to cheering, and booing
around us
At the end of play I ran with the kids
onto the field
met players, collected autographs
while she finished her book
sighing as she closed the covers on the handsome hero

Who won? she asked, when we returned

Pity she never noticed the hunky referee
who gazed up from the sidelines
smitten

Thanks, Sue! This lady does exist although I've lost contact with her now. She really did read all through the football while her two and three of mine cheered along with me and ran onto the field afterwards to meet the players 😉

I can really relate to buying my head into a book while oblivious to the 'circus' around me. Well-done Sandra.

Thanks, Greg! While I love our Aussie Rules football, there are a lot of other sports, and 'circuses', that I could happily read through, too. I was amazed one day to see my friend pick up a book she was halfway through reading and continue reading while she waited for the traffic lights to change - those behind her were not impressed when she didn't see them change and kept on reading 😮

I can totally relate to your friend, but I've been afraid to admit it until now. Perhaps she wasn't looking for a hunk. She had a love for words. As do I.
