Oh G*d, oh G*d, oh G*d. I am so lost. Why’d my phone have to slip from my hand into the restaurant’s toilet? Here I am alone in a strange city halfway around the world. My phone had all my stuff -- my map, my hotel key and address, my credit card information. Now it’s broke and I’m lost. Think, Ashleigh, think. Deep breath. Oh, G*d. What even is my hotel’s name? Why didn’t I write it down? How do I get back there? How do I even pay for my meal? What can I do? Help!

Oh, dear, Ashleigh is in a bit of a pickle. I hope she's not still panicking in that toilet! Nice story, Lynn, and a good commentary on how we can over depend on technology.

Thanks Jenny. Perhaps she was able to get the help of a good Samritan.

Hello Rashna. Agreed. Nothing remotely like this has ever happened to me, but just the thought of being in that position makes me shudder.

How not to travel.

Hello Mimi. How not to travel indeed. I'm always nervous enough about something happening to my phone that I always keep paper copies of the most important information, just in case.

Ashleigh is in a pickle all right; but still, nobody had died.

Hello Mary Anne. You came up with some good ideas. Whether or not they would succeed would likely depend on where in the world she is and how kind other people are. In the United States, for example, I fear that the hotels would not be at all helpful. Several years ago, I had been planning to meet with some friends in a hotel midway between our homes. When I arrived, the staff wouldn't even tell me whether my friends had checked in or what room they were in; they claimed that by law such information was confidential. I don't know whether what they said was true or whether, but if it was, I can't imagine any hotel helping Ashleigh; after all, she can't prove she is who she claims to be.

I have always been nervous to put info on my phone for this very reason. Always good to have paper back up and some cash on hand.

OMG. It's true, mobile phones have taken over our lives. We cannot exist without them. There is no help.

Acknowledging the problem is the first step toward a solution. Unfortunately, there are people who don't even realize a problem exists until something like my story's events happen to them. Comments are closed.
