“Yup,” I answered, pulling a willowy weed or two as I puffed, feeling my age.
“And,” he said reasoning it all out, “each year they come back again.” He faced me, smiling the most beatific smile, “So everything that dies comes back, and doesn’t really die at all. Just leaves for a while.”
I sat down, feeling very tired now. “I hope so.”
