The expedition to the volcano's southern face was the first trip Leonie had ever made without her husband. Later, in the hotel, she noticed her wedding ring was gone. She'd underestimated the mountaintop cold; it had slipped off her finger, unfelt. She thought of David, starting a new life with someone else, and, as she raised tear-filled eyes to the window, a flame the shape of a phoenix shot from the northern crater, leaving its shadow on the sky.
Leonie's heartbeat quickened at the sight. 'My marriage might be over,' she murmured, 'But the best is still to come.'

The action of the wedding ring and the effect of cold temperatures was clever. The implied message that small experiences can help bridge big challenges makes this an intriguing story.
