Submissions: Send Us A Story

Our primary focus has always been the weekly challenge to write a flash fiction story using 100 words or fewer.
​We also welcome short poetry. For those who really struggle with 100 words we also accept a few longer stories between 151 and 500 words. If your story is only just over 100 words in length, please try to edit it down.

To submit stories of any length, or poems, please post them using the Storybox on the left below.

If that causes you problems for some reason (some writers occasionally send a photo to accompany their stories, or to send us their biographical details) then please feel free to email us at submissions@fridayflashfiction.com. But we like you to use the Storybox for the stories themselves because it's easier to manage editorially and helps us stay in line with data protection legislation.

We're really keen to develop our "Authors" section, which you'll see gives full-face and shoulders pictures and very brief biographies of some of our contributors. Please could you think about sending us something? Keep it to a couple of sentences, but you can include a link to your website if you have one. Check out the Authors' zone for examples.

    STORYBOX (for stories of all lengths)

    (e.g. The Old Man and the Sea, by Ernest Hemingway – please include the appropriate capitals, the comma, spaces and the name you wish to use.)
    Please note that we prefer submissions of 70-100 words, although we accept short poetry and some stories of 151-500 words. We don't accept stories 101-150 words in length. All submissions must include a wordcount.
    Submissions with false wordcounts will always be rejected.

​SUBMISSIONS GUIDANCE
Please read this before submitting
The main reasons why submissions are rejected are:
  • they're longer than 500 words (our preferred length is 75-100 words and we reject short stories, too);
  • they're 101-150 words (inclusive) long;
  • the quality of writing is poor, often from someone unfamiliar with the English language;
  • the stories aren't actually fiction;
  • they're submitted as attachments, such as Word.
​Each of these problems can be solved, especially the first one. Part of the fun of writing flash fiction is shrinking your story to the required size!
FINALLY: A PLEA

The website is called Friday Flash Fiction because it was originally expected that writers should submit on Fridays. (You'll notice that we do offer you that option in the Storybox.) We're more flexible now, but we'd appreciate if you could try to stick to the (approximately) one-per-week rate. Posting each of these does take a little of our time. And we're not really a stage for lots of stories that you've also posted elsewhere; a few, yes, but please don't take advantage of a service that we provide for free but which isn't actually quite free for us to to provide.

To all authors: please note that we never copy and paste from any other site for a number of reasons including copyright. If it isn't submitted directly, it isn't submitted at all. That also applies to stories submitted to LinkedIn or to the FridayFlashFiction blog (see also Our Posting Relationship with Other Sites in the T&Cs).

But we don't claim any sort of exclusive rights here, so feel free to submit your story anywhere else as well.
