The deaths of men like these come like body blows to me for he was my boyhood hero a player then in his golden prime a part of Alf Ramsey’s sublime Three Lions football team one of only two Englishmen to score in a World Cup Final. Ten years ahead of his time his wise old manager said of this attacking midfielder a pioneer of the modern game. But though the ref has blown the final whistle on his life for me and my generation he has achieved immortality: we shall not see his like again. | |

For those nnot interested in football, this famous goal from the 1966 World Cup Final sums up Peters' special skill. He didn't just run around after the ball as most players did then: he watched from a slight distance and anticipated where it was going to end up. He could appear lazy, but in fact he just understood what happened in football.

Thanks so much Gordon for adding the picture, the video and the analysis of the skills of this special player for those of younger generations than me! A legend. Comments are closed.
