You Got This, by Lorraine Murphy

19/3/2022

All my strength can’t build a fortress
my arms can’t shield you through this battle
but I’ll protect you with my love
through scoffs and taunts until 3pm.
I am a father’s heartbreak at every schoolyard
coaching my child through cruel untruths
'I'm too fat, too slow, too different.'
I am every father who has counselled since dawn
exhausted and broken from pleas of
'Please Dad, I don’t want to go back'
but I do as every father must
exude encouragement through the bars
You are strong, boy, you got this
then slide my smile until 3pm
when the process starts
all over again.

This speaks right to the heart of so many children, bullied at school, for whom each day is a purgatory.

It's such a shame Sue.

So heartbreaking being a parent.

It is Lana, if you could take their pain you would.

If only a coach can impart confidence in kids with low esteem and take the place of a father, there will be more happy children. You have brought out the never-ending patience and kindness of a good coach/father in this poem. Lovely, Lorraine

A really poignant relationship with parents, with child, and resonant of standing with them, bullying affects a wider circle through disempowerment. I thought of my own school life, and think I should have been more aware of what parents do and go through . This perspective now I can have not as a parent but as a survivor.

    Poetry

This is the section where fiction prose becomes something else. We still expect the poems to be short, though – sonnets, perhaps, or around that length at the very most.

    Poems submitted should be
    no longer than 160 words
    and contain
    no more than 16 lines.

100 words remains the approximate target.

Please submit using the Poetry Submissions Page.
