Mistaken Identity, by Doug Bartlett

28/1/2022

It was 3 am when Harold awoke and sat straight up in bed. He was experiencing the most awful pain that spread from his abdomen to his chest. He figured at his age this day could very well be his last.

He began to reflect on all his regrets he had in life. You know, the things you wanted and planned to do but never got around to it.

He looked out his window and could see in the moonlit sky that far off was an angel of darkness that was rapidly approaching. This confirmed Harold’s thought that today would be his last. He got on his knees and began apologizing to God for all the bad things he had ever done in his lifetime. He then returned to bed and hid under the covers.

“ Maybe he won’t find me,” Harold foolishly thought.

A few moments later Harold felt a tapping on his head. He meekly peered out from under the covers only to be staring directly into the face of the Death Angel. The angel was chuckling.

“ Did you think you could hide from me, you silly human? Your time is up and you have lived a horrible life. It is time for me to take you, Herman, to a place of torment.”

“ Please, not me, not now. It’s too soon, way too soon. Give me another chance. I’ll do anything for another chance…… Hey, wait a minute. My name’s not Herman, It’s Harold.”

“ Rats, I’m at the wrong house. However, I will be back for you.”

Harold got up and took some Pepto-Bismol for his indigestion, realizing he had been given a second chance he certainly didn’t deserve.

The Angel of Death makes mistakes??? That’s a very uncomfortable thought.
How fast will Harold change his life??? Or will he change?

I left it open ended so you could finish it the way you wanted.

I love this story, Doug. What an excellent reminder that we should not waste the grace and second chances God gives us.

Your fun story is a Great wake call, that we all need to be prepared for the inevitable.
I don’t think the angel made a mistake, I believe it was intentional. Thank God for second chances. Awesome job Doug!!

If you do enough good in life then the Angel of Death might overlook the bad and deliver you to the Pearly Gates, not a place of torment.

I'm sorry Sue but I don't agree with that statement. Unfortunately, many people do.

Hi Sue,
I just felt compelled to reply to your comment. I hope you don’t mind. I believe that we can’t get to heaven by works, because God doesn’t pick favorites. To be accepted into heaven you must admit you’re a sinner, ask for forgiveness, admit that Jesus died for your sins and rose again, and ask Him to have a relationship with you. Jesus is a mystery and we won’t know everything until we get to Heaven. It is important to read the Bible and hang out with God or you can’t expect to have a relationship. If you don’t hang out with someone you can’t have a relationship. Ask God to help you understand His word “the Bible” I started this relationship 50 years ago when I was 17 years old. I’m still learning new things about God and His ways…

Mike B, I appreciate your clear and concise statement of the Gospel message. I agree and believe it. We are saved by grace, through faith, and not by works.

It wouldn't hurt Harold to get on his knees or go to church. Nothing like Amazing Grace to change those travel plans. Been feeling some of those pains myself, Doug.

Doug

Yes Candace you're right. His grace is amazing. Thank you for your response.

I think a lot of people have a distorted view of heaven. Heaven is where God is. To be in heaven is to be where God is. If you don't love Him in this life, why would you want to spend eternity with Him?

Doug
29/1/2022 06:42:26 pm

That is an excellent point Jennifer. Thank you for sharing it with us.

I'm pleased my comment opened a debate. I would point out that the comment "if you do enough good in life it will override the bad" was made by a Baptist minister many years ago (I'm not a Baptist). The premise seems to be a let out for committing "sin" so not something we should consider living our lives by.

Somewhere I read that "It is appointed for man once to die and then comes judgement." No mulligans.

I want to thank everyone for reading my story and commenting. I wrote it in such a way that I hoped it would encourage thought and discussion. I had no idea it would result in this much. I also appreciate the fact that everyone was respectful to everyone else. My country could learn a lesson from us. Once again, thank you.

EDITOR NOTE
31/1/2022 04:00:17 pm

As editor, I'm not quite as comfortable about this "debate" as many of you here seem to be. FFF enjoys a worldwide readership, and in no way excludes writers of other religions, or of none at all. Everyone's welcome.

This is a fiction site, not a site for the promotion of any given faith. Anyone unable to accept that would probably feel more at home in one of the many faith-based online writing communities.

I am particularly concerned to see that one of the comments – from someone who didn't have the courtesy to give their full name – was copied and pasted almost in its entirety from an article in the Port Huron "Times Herald" by Kacy Kanikowski on 21st Jan. However I'm leaving the comment up so that others may discover it for themselves. The commenter will have to live with the shame of their own plagiarism.

My own beliefs are irrelevant here, but they're private anyway. Meanwhile, anyone who wishes to take issue with what I've written here should contact me personally, but be warned: even the Angel of Death would think twice about taking me on when I'm defending the rights of our writers, whether on ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation or, yes, religious belief.

Thank you, Gordon for your note. I was very uncomfortable with the debate and some of the comments.

A clarification from you was much needed and appreciated.

You have my full support.

Thanks again,

Marjan
