“Is it always this crowded?” one passenger asked another.
“No. There are over 170,000 people they didn’t expect this early. And even more are coming.”
“How long have you been waiting?”
“Since March.”
“March?”
“The bureaucracy wasn’t prepared.”
They look down the tracks, expectantly, as if willing the train to appear.
“It’s going to get worse in the fall, they say.”
“Do you know where it will take us?”
"No one knows. The instructions only say to board. No destination has been posted.”
They stand silently waiting for the train. Behind them, the line grows.
