Leaving It Late, by Allison Symes

8/10/2021

‘You’re leaving it late, you’ve been dead for years.’

‘Tell me about it! Since you’re recently a ghost, and not before time, my liege, you now know I’m innocent of those trumped-up charges you brought. Pardon me! You refused in life. Do it now.’

‘Have you been waiting for me to join you in this accursed place to ask that?’

‘I can ask repeatedly for eternity or you can pardon me now and have done. Or will your damned pride stop you admitting you could ever be wrong even now, even here?’

The silence was telling.

Stubborn even in the fires of Hell! Like it Allison.

Many thanks, Bill. You might not be able to take possessions with you when you go but you DO take yourself, warts and all!

Pride goes before a pardon, even if justice will never be served.

Many thanks, Sue, but will our stubborn "hero" really keep the silence up for eternity?

    100-Word
    Stories

Since Friday Flash Fiction began in September 2013, 100-word stories have remained its 'beating heart'.

Normally, 100-word stories are scheduled for 07.00 BST (GMT in the winter) on the following Friday. However, where a large number of stories (more than 25) are due to be published on the same day, we publish a second batch around 10.30am.

Each week we pick a story or (occasionally) a poem as 'Editor's Choice'.
It's a personal favourite, no more. Do you agree?
