Making Memories, by Don Tassone

23/2/2024

The first thing my kids want to do at my parents’ house is take a ride in my dad’s car.

It’s a 1962 Rambler station wagon, just like the one my dad’s family had when he was a kid. He bought it a few years ago, restored it and upgraded it with seat belts, airbags and modern car seats. But there’s no air conditioning, DVD player or power windows.

My kids and their cousins pile in. They fight for window seats and the “way-back.” They ramble down country roads. Just a bunch of kids, including my dad, making memories.

I never gave it a thought that roll down windows would be a novelty to kids...thanks for the memory, Don

When Mom & Dad returned from their annual 2-week roadtrip across a section of the USA, Dad had a tan left arm; Mom a tan right arm. No airconditioning except the natural kind. Remember "cozy wings?" that kept the breeze from blowing directly in your face?
Yep, thanks for the memories, Don.

Peppermint, another feature of cozy wings was the ability to let some fresh air in when all the windows were closed on a cold day and you were getting a little too much heat. And no AC sometimes brought a sense of community amongst all the people on hot days. No rage. In spite of the discomfort

I loved that people waved with their hand out the window and kids pressed their noses against the back windshield and smiled at the people in the car behind them. Now these fond memories are captured in Norman Rockwell pictures and in Don's lovely 100 words of flash fiction. Very nice.

I love the 'including dad' which you sneaked in there. Bet he's the biggest kid of the lot, Don, like many granddads are lucky enough to be.

What a well written, feel-good tale!
Reminiscent of "The Waltons."

The best stories make you feel you’ve been left with so much more than the total number of words written, and this is definitely one of those. We’ll done, Don.

"Old school" is so cool (like the breeze from a rolled-down car window). Thanks for the memories, Don.
