Mele Kalikimaka, by Jim Bartlett

11/12/2021

“The sand, the waves, the ocean breeze...let everyone else race around in the Christmas rush. This year I’m soaking up the tropical sun.” He leans back in his beach chair, letting the water lap at his toes.

“Sorry boss...we gotta go.”

The familiar voice comes from behind.

“But my tan...”

“Not happening...we’re outta time.”

He slowly turns. Rudolph, his red nose coated in sunblock, stands next to three elves, who have it plastered over their pointed ears. All four are clad in bright Hawaiian shirts.

“But...”

“Come on, Santa, it’s time to merry up Christmas.”

*Mele Kalikimaka is Hawaiian for Merry Christmas.

I really enjoyed this one Jim!! I was just telling G.B. how I missed your Santa Barbara Santa, Christmas cards. This story made up for it well. I could picture it all in color in my mind, all being Merry and Bright!!

I loved those cards as well! Though we have a nearby beach, there's a bit more nip in the air here, so they don't quite fit the bill any longer ;-)
Thanks so much for the kind words

it definitely feels less christmassy in the tropics, even if the palm trees all have lights on them. Great story, Jim!

I think that perception all depends on where you first (and most often) experienced Christmas (or the holiday you celebrate). I'll take palm trees with blinky lights any December. ;-)
Thanks so much, Drew

I'm with David N., Jim. Love the scene change. Someone wants told me to say it in a way that it has never been said before. Mission accomplished.

Love it. Puts me in mind of on of my Mum and Dad's favourites, Bing Crosby's song:"Mele Kalikimaka is the thing to say, on a bright Hawaiian Christmas day..." Yes, I can quote the whole song, pretty much verbatim bu I'll spare you! And I love the story.

I love that there is a Bing Crosby Mele Kalikimaka song!!! And very cool that you know the words. I'm going to have to Google that now!!
Thanks for the kind words, Fliss

    "Classic"
    100-Word
    Stories

Since Friday Flash Fiction began in September 2013, 100-word stories have remained its 'beating heart'.

Normally, 100-word stories are scheduled for 07.00 BST (GMT in the winter) on the following Friday. However, where a large number of stories (more than 25) are due to be published on the same day, we publish a second batch around 10.30am.
Recently, we've welcomed a lot of newcomers and found that even two batches doesn't cover them all. Wherever that happens, we'll simply be publishing 'as and when' during the course of the day.

Each week we pick a story or (occasionally) a poem as 'Editor's Choice'.
It's a personal favourite, no more. Do you agree?
