“Thank you, Mr. Clifford,” said his attorney.
“Do you have any further questions?” the judge asked the defense attorney.
“No, Your Honor. The defense rests.”
The jury found Clifford’s former bandmates guilty of copyright infringement. The judge ordered them to pay him nearly a million dollars in damages.
A few months later, Clifford was diagnosed with untreatable throat cancer. He asked his former bandmates to record an album to memorialize his best songs, which they had made famous together.
Their manager politely declined.
“Your songs belong to you,” he wrote.
